It is a light yellow powder at room temperature and tastes bitter. It is insoluble in methanol, ethanol, and acetone, slightly soluble in chloroform and nitrobenzene, almost insoluble in water, and soluble in hot acetic acid. It turns green when it comes into contact with ferric chloride, and forms an orange precipitate when it comes into contact with lead acetate. It turns yellow when it is dissolved in alkali and ammonia water, and soon turns dark brown. It has significant biological activity, and has antibacterial, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, cholesterol-lowering, anti-thrombotic, asthma-relieving, fire-clearing and detoxifying, hemostatic, tocolytic, anti-allergic and antispasmodic effects. It is also a specific inhibitor of mammalian liver salivary enzymes, has the function of regulating certain diseases, and also has a strong physiological efficacy of anti-cancer reactions.
